We Need an Ark

It's been raining in Houston for a year.

Ok, four days, but if you have kids you know how I feel.

O's been standing at the window saying "Oh no, mama! It's waining!" for days and I feel bad that I keep telling her we can't go outside. It's rained hard enough that I probably could have shampooed her hair and then sent her out for a rinse and called bath time done. But enough talk about wasted opportunities. If it keeps up much longer, I'm just going to strap a raincoat on that kid and we're going out, wet or not.

So what have we been doing?

Stickers, lots of stickers. We've baked, we've colored, we've painted, we've watched Disney movies an embarrassing number of times, we've played dress up princesses until we have no clean clothes left, and made good friends with the staff at the indoor playground.

But we miss the outside. Our pool is overflowing and a ten day forecast that calls for more rain has me feeling cabin crazy. So hit me, mamas. What do you do to pass the rainy day time?

  1. This is how I felt all winter! You are doing great so far! Add play doh and puzzles to the list. We play supermarket, tea party, build Legos, etc. Noah loves playing in the sink. We let him wash the plastic plates or his little people figurines (he says the animals are getting a bath). We also went to the local library a few times and the mall (ours had a fountain to throw coins in). And scheduling play dates kept my sanity because even though it was more to clean up after, I got to have adult conversation and the kids played on their own. Good luck!

  2. This is exactly how I felt all winter and ur was a long one! Play dough has been giving us hours of entertainment these days. Also paint swatch cards from Home Depot- we take stickers and match the colors (pink stickers get stuck in the pink card). It's a fun way to learn and use the 4 million stickers we have. Where are those paint cups from? They're genius!

  3. Winter in the Midwest.... So so long with a toddler!! Play dates kept me sane, we did afternoon long baths and painted in the tub, played grocery shopping (she wheels her cart over, I "buy" food). A garbage can became a basketball hoop. The pet store was also a great outing, go look at the fish and bunnies. Good luck!

  4. I second the pet store! It's like a zoo to a toddler! I don't work during the summers and it's almost like dealing with constant rain, except heat. We end up staying inside a lot because of it. This year, I put K in dance classes for the summer (hasn't started yet - I hope she loves it), and they have a thing where you can pay $10 for the summer and go every Friday for an "open studio day". They pull out all the costumes and basically the girls can play dress up, play, and dance. I reeeeeallly hope Kennedy likes it, because it sounds awesome.

  5. When my brother was little (there's a huge age gap between us) I would tape an empty wrapping paper roll to the wall and have him drop bouncy balls down it. Hours of entertainment!

  6. Forts with blankets and pillows, "washing" dishes at the sink (could go on forever as long as I don't expect real washing to get done - the more clothes and sponges the better), baby doll spa (wash and brush the hair of all dolls in the entire house), cat videos on Netflix... Just go out. Seriously. shopping mall (don't expect to get any real shopping done but even going for a food court lunch is a nice sanity break). Grocery store (hit bakery first, happy toddler happy mama). Walk in the rain with umbrellas. Book store.

  7. Oh my word, that was us last week. Over a week straight of rain and then to top it off, a tornado and then 7 inches of snow 2 days later. The kid and the dog were going nuts...as was mama ;)

  8. That's how we end up feeling in the winter. :) Cash loves the library! We do popcorn & movies on the couch with blankets, shaving cream at the table, forts (although Luke is way better at building them), play-doh, tablet time, inside picnics for lunch, afternoon baths to pass the time. We are supposed to have a few rainy days in our upcoming forecast, too. Boo!

  10. Yes! It was horrible! I know you enjoyed today then. So pretty. I was just telling the hubs that after all this rain I have the urge to go to the zoo like two times in one week. LOL. With the gorillas opening it just might happen!

  11. So many great ideas from everyone! We do dance parties, Follow the Leader, "skating" in socks on the wood floors, keeping balloons afloat, online Madeline videos, playing zoo with stuffed animals or putting doll clothes on them, and baking a summer celebration cake.
